No Day Without A Line
Welcome poets, friends, and fellow humans. Today we begin our first small step in forming a community of poets and artists.
Let’s write.
As we enter 2024, we feel called to begin a practice that Diane di Prima taught. “Nulla dies sine linea,” (No day without a line). Diane wrote this on the cover of her notebooks at age 14, devoting to write each and every day at least a single line. We begin this Substack to create a safe cocoon for us writers to commit to the practice of writing a single line a day for January. We hope to continue to build this community of poets, writers, and artists with workshops, prompts, retreats, and sharing the teachings we were honored to learn over the decades of poetic studies with di Prima in San Francisco, both on and off the page.
This space will be safe, open as the wide sky, and a home for you to share your line a day.
Our first seed planted is a safe space for each new member to commit and practice writing their line each day of January. You may write a whole poem and share it. You may write one single line and share it. Know you are safe and held, and the lines wish so deeply for you to dance them into this world.

Thinking aloud makes me feel proud
Yet pen on paper is my favorite sound
For crying out loud isn't laughing out loud
Nor is talking to myself when I'm in a crowd
I don't like your favorite band
You don't think my style is fly
It's easy still to be your friend
I love onions but they make you cry
I respect our different taste
For I know this much is true
One day we'll be eighty eight
And we'll agree on our favorite brew
